2014 Gathering

2014 Newsletter

Hello my Corriente friends,

I am slow getting this out, but maybe it won’t get laid aside and forgotten about.  Our first show was a success.  I say that because we survived and everybody there left with some kind of award.  We broke in a new announcer, Colton Williams, and he will be back to help again.  Thanks Colton.  David Rose also jumped in to keep up with the roping points.  It was all hands on deck to help Duke in the pens during confirmation classes.  We had 11 paid memberships to SWCA and all classes were sanctioned with the exception of 2 yr old bulls in the roping class.   The totals and results will follow this letter.
We had a very informal meeting.  We agreed to try another show for 2014.  We will split the yearling classes by age as we had over 20 in each of those and drop 2 yr old bull classes.  Mel asked about our tax exempt status (which is finally in the works) and I reported that Nancy had sent it and it had been returned with some corrections needed but will have it done before next show.  Ricky asked for time to report on NACA.  He said that it was coming along and reported on dates for the National show.  Ellen had told me that the $500 for regions might be reinstated so I asked at that time.  Ricky and Mrs. Cates explained that it would be some time before NACA would be on solid ground never mind be able to help the regions.  Mrs. Cates asked if we needed to elect directors and no one wanted to run, so we will continue as we are for now.  Awards were passed out and all went home.  It was short and sweet and nice.  I am hoping our Gathering this year will be as nice.
We had 4808.49 from previous gatherings and after our show, we have 2623.26.  We used 2185.23 out of previous money, but after checking our budget, I found where I made some mistakes, and where more money can be made.  Right off the bat, we will not need glue and that was 178.50, office supplies that will not need replaced were 808.14, and the chuck wagon was a 1510.00 loss.  I will learn from my mistakes, and will not make the same ones again.  Without those expenses, our show would have made 311.41 so I will do better.
I am very excited to say that our roping is going to be a little different this year.  It will be SWCA cattle and Jerry Trujillo from Portales, NM will be running and promoting it.  He feels that now is the time to promote North American raised purebred Corrientes, as he says they are the best he has ever roped, and with roping cattle numbers so low we need to take advantage of it.
Our show will be June 14 & 15 at the Clovis Events Center, Clovis, NM. Duke Sundt will be our judge.  I am trying to block rooms at the Clovis Inn and Suites again, but you might want to get your rooms in advance and cancel later if you can’t come.  We will not have the chuck wagon, but I will book a room at K-bob’s after the roping Sunday to give awards.  Each person can order and pay out separately.  Maybe 2015 will bring a banquet.  We will have the silent auction again so please bring something to auction off.  We did really well last year and was delighted that the hoses we had to buy for the show went very quickly in the auction.
There will be a short informal meeting before the show begins.  I have a few changes that will be enforced in order to make my life easier.  Any cattle that are tagged wrong will be disqualified.  There will be help on the grounds to help tag if needed.  There will be a disqualification of cattle if the funds do not clear the bank.  It costs our association money for the debit to our account plus the time it takes to get it collected which is never recovered.  The late fee will be enforced.  I know the rules allow for pending cattle to be qualified, but the owner MUST furnish copy of papers before the class starts.  We will go through some other small items at the membership meeting, but these I felt all interested parties needed to be aware of now.  I am trying to get a special award done (surprise) for the SWCA member with the most points or high earner; something to give incentive to join our region.
I appreciate all input and discussion, so feel free to call me after 6 tx time at night or on weekends.  Below is a list of paid members for 2013, ranches represented at the 2013 Gathering, and results.  Attached are flyers for the roping and the Gathering.
See you all there,
